Connected. Informed. Supported. Women’s Health Week 2022
If you asked ten people for a definition of a typical woman, you’d get 10 different answers, depending on their experiences with women, or their first-hand experience as a woman. Women cannot be defined by one word alone, we fit into many different categories, and wear many different hats each day. We are career women, homemakers, mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, innovators, carers.
There’s no doubt that women are busy beings, and sometimes, when we’re just knuckling down and getting life done, we neglect the very thing that keeps us going; our health. Every September, a week is dedicated to shining a light on the importance of women’s health, encouraging women to take stock of their own health, and to see where they could be making better health choices in their lives.
From 5-11 September, Jean Hailes Women’s Health Week is dedicated to highlighting good health for women, young girls, and gender diverse people. So, who was Jean Hailes? Jean was a visionary in the field of women’s health, and identified a gap addressing the health needs of menopausal women. In 1971 she established the first women’s health clinic in Australia – one of the inaugural menopause clinics in the world – dedicated to midlife and menopause. Jean devoted her life to ensuring that women were educated and informed about their bodies and health, and her work is carried on today by people equally as passionate about the health of all women.
Women’s Health Week is a reminder to set aside time for your health and wellbeing. Make an appointment for a health check, get active, join an event or simply connect with other women. You don’t have to do it alone.
