Attention: Men’s Health Mo Growers!
Strong, brave, stoic, tough, hero. These are all words used to describe men. Big, brutish creatures that traditionally, have been taught to hide their emotions, hold it all together, be the breadwinner, the man of the house, the leader of the pack. It’s 2022 and times have changed, and men can be whatever they want to be, but sadly, boys are still taught that to be a man, you can’t show emotion or talk about your feelings, your health or your problems in life.
Did you know that every day in Australia, approximately seven men will die by suicide, and one in every 8 men will experience depression in their lives? Devastating, right? Did you also know that prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian men, and more than 800 Aussie men are diagnosed with testicular cancer each year? Must be hard to stay tough when faced with such terrible statistics. It’s time for men to open up about their mental and physical health problems and know that there is no shame in seeking advice, showing you care, and being there for your mates when times get tough.
Are you up for a challenge this November, one that involves either doing very little, or challenging yourself to a more adventurous pursuit? Turn your November into a Movember and help to change the course of men’s mental health issues and male specific diseases such as prostate and testicular cancer. All you have to do is get in touch with your hairy side, and grow a mo, get some sponsors, and make a difference in the lives of men. Since 2003, the Movember movement has helped more than 1250 men’s health projects around the world, thanks to generous donations from everyday people who want to see the men in their lives happier, healthier and living longer.
Even though Movember benefits men, everyone can participate, with a range of events and challenges to suit young, old, male and female. Obviously, you can grow a mo, but you can also choose to run or walk 60km in the month of November (to represent the 60 men who suicide each hour around the world), host a mo-ment party or event, to raise funds for the cause, or if you’re really up for a challenge, choose your own adventure and get sponsored for doing something that is way beyond your comfort zone! Go to the Movember website for more information and to sign up.
